STREET SEARCH IN MEXICO GPS ATLAS

The address system in Mexico is different to the one in the US, which most GPS receivers are designed to work with. A typical US address has the following components

Number
Street Name
City
State
Zip

In Mexico, we also use a concept called Colonia.  The US equivalent would be like neighborhood, which is not part of the typical US address scheme.

At BiciMapas we had to make some adaptations to include the Colonia in our map’s search system.  Following you will find an explanation on how to perform such searches. Before that, we would like to define a couple of concepts.

Address Search

By this concept we understand the search of a full address including the external building number. Such a search includes:

Street, External number, Colonia, State

Street Search

It is almost the same as above except that it does not include the external building number, just the street name.

STREET SEARCH PROCESS FOR CITIES THAT HAVE THE "COLONIAS" FEATURE

Starting with Mexico GPS Atlas 2009 edition our
map supports  Street Search  for all the cities included, as well as Address Search in selected areas as described in the Features section.

We have included the Colonia information in the cities of Guadalajara and surroundings,  Chihuahua, Monterrey and surroundings as well as Mexico City (Distrito Federal which is its legal address name).

To do a street search in them, you simply introduce the name of the Colonia instead of the city name.
Let’s  see this example in which we will find this street

Francia
Colonia Moderna, Guadalajara, Jalisco

 Step 1. Select Address

Step 2. Select Mexico as Country

Step 3. When asked for the city name,  enter the Colonia, in this case “Moderna”

Step 4. Then select “Moderna, Guadalajara, Jalisco”

Step 5. Enter the street name “Francia” and select it from the options

Step 6. If the address search is within an area that has the house number feature available, enter the number now. If the search is in an anrea without the house number feature, when asked  for the building number, enter any. In this case we used 1.

Step 7. Several blocks of the street with the name looked for will show.

Step 8. After selecting one of them, chose among seeing it in the map or GO for routing there.

Step 9. We selected the Show Map option for this image.

STREET SEARCH FOR CITIES THAT DO NOT HAVE THE COLONIA FEATURE

For the remainder of the cities that do not have Colonias yet, use the standard procedure entering the  city name.  Let’s look for this street:

Ejercitos de Oriente
Puebla, Puebla

Step 1. As in the example above select  Address

Step 2. Select Mexico as Country

Step 3. When asked for the city name,  enter  “Puebla”

Step 4. Then select “Puebla, Puebla”

Step 5. Enter the street name “Ejercito de Oriente” and select it

Step 6. As currently we do not have full address search, when asked  for the building number, enter any. In this case we used 1.

Step 7. After selecting the street, chose among seeing it in the map or GO for routing there.
