In this post I show how to upload routes to a Garmin Edge 530 GPS bike computer. This should work any other Garmin Edge device as it is done through Garmin Connect.

I get GPX files in various ways like through and email with the file attached or a in a messaging app such as WhatsApp and lately even form route creation web apps. The process to send them to your device is about the same in all cases.

If you have a Wahoo Elemnt device, check our post on HOW TO UPLOAD ROUTES TO A WAHOO ELEMNT BOLT GPS BIKE COMPUTER

Let’s do it.

UPLOADING GPX TRACKS TO THE GARMIN EDGE 530 USING GARMIN CONNECT MOBILE APP

There are several ways in which you can get a file of a route, like a web service, an email attachment or a in a WhatsApp message. Wherever it come from, the process to send them to a Garmin device is almost the same.

LOAD THE ROUTE FROM AN EMAIL ATTACHMENT IN YOUR CELL PHONE

Step 1.  Open the Email with the attached file and touch the file icon.

Step 2. Scroll through the options until you find the Garmin Connect app and select it

Step 3. In Garmin Connect select the type of course you will assign to this route. I selected Mountain Biking. The route opens and is shown over a map.

Step 4. Scroll down to see the elevation profile and more editing options. I changed the name to something more meaningful to me.

Step 5. Press the save button, select whether you want it Public or Private and the course is now saved in the Connect app.

Step 6. Turn on your Garmin device. In the app, select the course from the list, it will open and then press the upper right menu and select Send To Device. Select your device from the list.

LOAD THE ROUTE FROM A WEB SERVICE APP

In this case, the route was created in www.plotaroute.com that allows to share them through a link once you finish plotting a route. The advantage of doing it this way is that it exemplifies how it would be done if the file is downloaded from any web routing option.

The steps and images that follow are using an iPhone but should be similar with an Android based cell phone.

Step 1. Open the email or text message with the link as shown here

Step 2. Click the link and the Plotaroute page opens showing the route over the map with some basic information like distance, climbing, type of terrain, etc.

Step 3. Scroll down so that you can see the “DOWNLOAD” button and select it

Step 4. Make sure to select the options shown in the screen (which are the default, just make sure they are correct).

File Type: GPS

Format: GPX

GPX Type: Track

And hit the download button

Step 4. A screen will pop up asking to confirm that you want to download the file. Select download.

Step 5. Go to the Files App then to Downloads and select the file you just downloaded and then the “Send To” icon

Step 6. Scroll through the options until you find the Garmin Connect app and select it

Step 7. In Garmin Connect select the type of course you will assign to this route. I selected Mountain Biking. The route opens and is shown over a map.

Step 8. Scroll down to see the elevation profile and more editing options. I changed the name to something more meaningful to me.

HOW TO GET A HOLD OF THE ROUTE IN YOUR DEVICE

The following images are from an Edge 530 and should be representative of other devices in the Edge range.

In the device go to Menu/Navigation/Courses and select the uploaded route. If you are ready to start, press Ride and the device will be ready to guide you. If you select MAP, the map screen will show with the route on top of it.
