How to Upload Routes to a Wahoo Elemnt Bolt GPS Bike Computer

In this post I show how to upload routes to a Wahoo Elemnt Bolt GPS Bike Computer  in GPX file format using the cell phone Elemnt App.

I get GPX files in various ways like through and email with the file attached or a in a messaging app such as WhatsApp and lately even form route creation web apps. The process to send them to your device is about the same in all cases.

If you have a Garmin device, check our post on How to Upload Routes to a Garmin Edge 530.

Let’s do it.

UPLOADING GPX TRACKS TO THE WAHOO ELEMNT BOLT USING WAHOO ELEMNT APP

There are several ways in which you can get a file of a route, like a web service, an email attachment or a in a WhatsApp message. Wherever they come from, the process to send them to a Wahoo device is almost the same.

GET THE ROUTE FROM AN EMAIL ATTACHMENT

Step 1.  Open the Email with the attached file and touch the file icon.

Step 2. Scroll through the options until you find the Wahoo Elemnt app and select it

Step 3. The Wahoo Elemnt app opens and prompts you to confirm or type a new name for the file being imported. Once you are done press OK

Step 4. The route screen opens showing the name, length, height gain, map and height profile. At this time, turn on your device and the “Select” button will be enabled.

Step 5. Press the “Select” button, and the route will be sent to the device. The device will confirm that the route was loaded.

GET THE ROUTE FROM A WHATSAPP MESSAGE

Step 1.  In the message, touch the file icon.

Step 2. Select the send to icon on the top right

Step 3. Scroll through the options until you find the Wahoo Elemnt app and select it

Step 4. The Wahoo Elemnt app opens and prompts you to confirm or type a new name for the file being imported. Once you are done press OK

Step 5. The route screen opens showing the name, length, height gain, map and height profile. At this time, turn on your device and the “select” button will be enabled.

Step 6. Press the select button, and the route will be sent to the device. The device will confirm that the route was loaded.

GET THE ROUTE FROM A WEB SERVICE APP

In this case, the route was created in www.plotaroute.com that allows to share them through a link once you finish plotting a route. The advantage of doing it this way is that it exemplifies how it would be done if the file is downloaded from any web routing option.

The steps and images that follow are using an iPhone but should be similar with an Android based cell phone.

Step 1. Open the email with the link as shown here

Step 2. Click the link and the Plotaroute page opens showing the route over the map with some basic information like distance, climbing, type of terrain, etc.

Step 3. Scroll down so that you can see the “DOWNLOAD” button and select it

Step 4. Make sure to select the options shown in the screen (which are the default, just make sure they are correct).

File Type: GPS

Format: GPX

GPX Type: Track

And hit the download button

Step 4. A screen will pop up asking to confirm that you want to download the file. Select download.

Step 5. Go to the Files App then to Downloads and select the file you just downloaded and then the “Sent To” icon

Step 6. Scroll through the options until you find the Wahoo Elemnt app and select it

Step 7.
